The old house of Newbiggin stands low, near some wild broken ground, with a brook or runner in front. The walls are of solid masonry, and the chief staircase of stone. There are, or were, the remains of something like a peal or tower on the west (Surtees).
The remains of a Pele or tower on the west are now taken down (Makenenzie and Ross).
There is no tower here, but about 50 years ago a building (site pointed out) was pulled down and in the walls were very narrow windows - this may have been the tower. (local oral report) There is no trace of this presumably medieval peel. (Field Investigators Comments–F1 JHO 26-JUL-54). (PastScape)
