There was a small tower-house within the Roman fort NY27NW 4.00, datable to the 15th and 16th centuries, and occupied by a family of Carlyles. It is not known whether there was an earlier building, but this is likely. There were occupied dwellings within the fort area until well into the 18th century. Surface finds of medieval pottery have occasionally been made. (W Roy 1747-55; W A J Prevost 1961; A E Truckell and J Williams 1967)
Listed as tower. (RCAHMS 1997) (Canmore)

Gatehouse Comments

What is meant by a 'small tower house'? Presumably a peel-house bastle.
